Read the passage carefully and answer the question that follows

One of the basic language skills is reading. In any literate society, reading is a very essential aspect of effective communication in daily activities. Reading has been many things to many people. To some people, it is like looking at printed words while most students see it as a tedious task that has to be performed in order to pass a particular examination. Reading, like any other term, has been described in different ways, such as "Reading as an intellectual activity directed towards the extraction of information from a written piece". One of the causes of mass failure in various examinations among candidates is their inability to imbibe a good reading culture. With poor reading habits, learners cannot comprehend the emphasised hence adequate textbooks should be provided for students.
