The scene begins with the Governor’s Messenger delivering a formal, elaborate speech filled with intimidating diction, praising the Governor extensively.
The focus then shifts to Jilo, who is preparing to go to the river to wash. She asks Fanneh to take Jeneba to Mama Yoko, but Fanneh informs her that Mama Yoko has sent her on an errand to another village. Fanneh then inquires about Jilo’s case, and Jilo explains that it will be heard once Lansana is brought back from Taiama. When Fanneh questions Jilo about her affair, Jilo blames Ndapi’s harsh treatment and constant accusations of adultery. She justifies her actions by saying she needed admiration and reassurance, which Lansana provided. However, Fanneh reminds Jilo that her family may not be able to refund Ndapi’s dowry and doubts whether Lansana can afford the penalties, especially since Jilo is now pregnant.
Jilo momentarily leaves Jeneba alone while she escorts Fanneh, giving Lamboi the opportunity to kidnap the child. He uses a fruit and a powerful charm to lure Jeneba into following him without resistance.
Later in the evening, the scene shifts to Mama Yoko’s gathering with the elders. She announces that she will be travelling to Talama to crown two chiefs at the Governor’s request. She also mentions that discussions on house taxes will take place upon her return. Lavalie strongly opposes the idea of paying taxes on their own land and homes, but Mama Yoko insists that if the Governor demands it, they must comply. Before leaving, she appoints Lamboi to act on her behalf, with Musa as his deputy.
Meanwhile, Lansana is captured and brought before Mama Yoko. It is revealed that, despite having three wives, he was not satisfied and engaged in an affair. Mama Yoko orders that he be imprisoned until she returns.
At this moment, Jilo rushes in, crying, and reports Jeneba’s disappearance. She had assumed Jeneba was playing with Mama Nancy’s children all day. In response, Mama Yoko orders a search party to find the missing girl before departing for her assignment in Taiama, leaving Lamboi and Musa in charge.
