Let Me Die Alone: Chapter 7 - Act Three Scene One

The scene opens at the barre where Lamboi is seated on Mama Yoko's throne. While soliloquising, Lamboi reveals his deep desire to rule Moyamba, acknowledging that he has taken a violent path from which he cannot turn back. Lavalie enters and reports that the search for Jeneba has yielded no results. Shortly after, Musa arrives to inform Lamboi that he has begun spreading rumours that Mama Yoko used Jeneba for a power sacrifice. When Lavalie returns, Lamboi and Musa deceive him by claiming that the Gbeni oracle has confirmed their fabricated story. Musa elaborates, saying that Gbeni divined that Mama Yoko buried Jeneba alive in a large pot in the bush to increase her power and win the Governor’s favour.

Ndapi initially doubts the claim that Mama Yoko sacrificed Jeneba and demands proof. Lavalie insists that Musa must swear an oath to confirm that Gbeni truly made such a divination. Meanwhile, a guard reports that the women are spreading rumours that Mama Yoko used Jeneba as a power sacrifice. The Sande women are furious and want her removed from power.

When Mama Yoko returns from Taiama, she finds chaos in her chiefdom. The people have turned against her, and a crowd of women angrily call her a murderer, demanding justice. When she questions Lamboi about the situation, she realises he has betrayed her. He taunts her, saying, “Madam, there is no peace in the minds of those that kill.”

Mama Yoko tries to take charge, but Ndapi defies her. He commands her not to move, blocks her from sitting on the throne, and even pushes her to the ground. He declares that she will only be queen again when she finds his daughter, Jeneba. Lavalie reveals that Gbeni’s divination accused her of using Jeneba for sacrifice, and Ndapi claims that this is what earned her the Governor’s favour. He further insults her for being childless, saying she cannot understand the pain of losing a child.

Mama Yoko offers to swear by Poro to prove her innocence, but Musa forbids it. Ndapi threatens to kill her if she dares. Just as he is about to throw a spear at her, a loud noise interrupts him. Jeneba’s body has been found behind the Sande bush by women digging for potatoes. The corpse is decayed, with the heart and private parts missing. This gruesome discovery clears Mama Yoko of the accusation, as it proves she did not bury Jeneba alive in a pot. Realising his mistake, Ndapi begs Mama Yoko for forgiveness. She instructs Lavalie to prepare the Poro bush, where the truth behind Jeneba’s murder will be revealed.

Musu and Fanneh discuss the situation. Fanneh reports that the women have gone to ask for Mama Yoko’s forgiveness, but she has locked herself in her room, grieving. They also mention her plan to go to the Poro bush to uncover the murderers. A guard warns them about the dangers of Poro night, but they explain they were distracted while gathering firewood. Another guard escorts them home safely.

That night, at the Poro bush, it is revealed that Lamboi and Musa were responsible for Jeneba’s murder. Ndapi wants to hunt them down, but Mama Yoko stops him, believing they have already fled far from Mende land. She is confident that Gbeni’s curse will find them wherever they go.

A guard announces the arrival of the Governor’s Messenger. Since he is a Poro member, he is allowed to enter. His message is devastating: the Governor has reduced the size of Mama Yoko’s chiefdom. Heartbroken, she quietly instructs Lavalie to bring her the poisonous roots of the Ndinabe tree. She has decided to commit honourable suicide. Guard is sent to ensure the roots are delivered, and Mama Yoko retreats to her barre.

Before taking her own life, she sends a final message to the Governor, expressing her disappointment:
“… In all my years as ruler of this chiefdom, I have never been disgraced like this. The way he has redrawn the boundary is a slap in the face for a woman who has remained loyal to him all these years.”

When the roots arrive, Mama Yoko calls Musu and instructs her to prepare a potion. Musu, recognising the poison, hesitates, but Mama Yoko delivers an emotional speech about her tragic life. Ndapi and Jilo arrive, seeking an audience, but she refuses to see them.

Musu prepares the deadly concoction, and Mama Yoko drinks it. She orders Musu to discard the rest, knowing fully well it will kill her. Messenger is dismissed. Musu offers to die alongside her mistress, but Mama Yoko refuses, saying:
“… I don’t want two graves. I have savoured the fruits of power alone; I have known and enjoyed the grandeur of high office alone. If I am to die, then let me die alone.”

This line is the inspiration for the play’s title.

The maids try to save her with palm oil, but it is too late. Mama Yoko dies, asking that no one mourn her.
