In literature, a tragic character is one that experiences a downfall due to their own flaw or mistake. The downfall of this character arouses feelings of pity and fear (or terror) in the audience. This is a concept known as 'catharsis', a term used by Aristotle in his work 'Poetics', to describe the feelings of pity and fear that the audience feels for the tragic hero.
