Thorn carving in Western Nigeria (Yorubaland) began in the 20th century, it is being said to have begun in a school in 1930s, where the headmaster of a school in Shagamu encouraged some boys to carve stamps (such as those used for Adrinka printing) out of the soft thorns of local trees. Owo is a town in Ondo State and it is credited with the origin of thorn carving in Nigeria, thanks to Mr.J.D.Akeredolu, a craft teacher who experimented with thorn wood carvings. His students continued the craft, and it has since become a signature art form of the region.
