Aww 🥹 first time? Don’t worry at all — I’ll guide you step by step.

Since you’re writing JAMB (UTME) for the first time, here’s everything you need to know:

---

1️⃣ What Is JAMB?

JAMB means Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

It is the exam you must pass before entering any Nigerian university like:

University of Lagos

Babcock University

Federal University Ndufu-Alike

---

🎯 How JAMB Exam Works

✅ 1. It is Computer-Based (CBT)

You will:

Sit in front of a computer

Click your answers (A, B, C, or D)

No writing on paper

---

✅ 2. Subjects You’ll Write

You will write 4 subjects.

English (Compulsory for everyone)

3 other subjects depending on your course

Example:

Medicine → English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Management course → English, Maths, Economics, Government (example)

---

✅ 3. Total Marks

Each subject = 100 marks

Total = 400 marks

A very good score is 250 and above (but depends on the course).

---

🧠 How To Prepare Smartly

📌 1. Understand the Syllabus

Download and study the official JAMB syllabus for your subjects.

📌 2. Practice CBT

Since it’s computer-based:

Practice on CBT apps

Get used to clicking answers quickly

📌 3. Time Management

You have about 2 hours for 4 subjects.

Don’t spend too much time on one question.

If you don’t know an answer: 👉 Skip it
👉 Come back later

---

📅 On Exam Day

✔ Sleep well the night before
✔ Eat something light
✔ Go early to the center
✔ Stay calm

If a question looks hard, breathe. Many questions are repeated yearly in different forms.

Okay, welcome to the world of JAMB! It can feel a bit overwhelming the first time, but don't worry, I'm here to guide you through it. Think of this as your personal roadmap to acing JAMB.

Let's break down the whole process, from registration to the exam day itself:

Phase 1: Pre-Registration & Registration

Know Your Course & Institution:
Decision First: Before anything else, decide what course you want to study (e.g., Accounting, Law, Medicine) and which universities/polytechnics/colleges you want to apply to (your first choice, second choice, etc.). Research their O'Level and JAMB subject requirements thoroughly!
JAMB Brochure: Get the official JAMB Brochure (usually available digitally or at accredited CBT centers) or use online resources to verify the exact JAMB subject combination and O'Level requirements for your chosen course in your preferred institutions. This is CRUCIAL.

Obtain Your NIN (National Identification Number):
The NIN is mandatory for JAMB registration. If you don't have one, start the process early at an NIMC enrollment center.

Create Your JAMB Profile:
Send your NIN to 55019 or 66019 via SMS. You'll receive a 10-digit profile code. This code is what you'll use to buy your JAMB e-PIN.

Purchase Your JAMB e-PIN:
You'll buy this from accredited banks, JAMB CBT centres, or online platforms. This e-PIN is what allows you to fill out the JAMB form.

Go to an Accredited CBT Center:
You cannot register for JAMB at home. You must go to an accredited JAMB CBT (Computer-Based Test) center.
Do NOT use rogue agents! Only use officially recognized centers.
At the center, your details (NIN, O'Level results, choices of institutions/courses, bio-data) will be uploaded. Your biometric (fingerprints) will be captured. This is also where you'll select your exam town.
Review everything carefully before final submission. Errors can be costly later.

Print Your Slip:
After successful registration, you'll be given a printout of your JAMB registration slip. Keep this safe! It contains your registration number, exam date, time, and center.

Phase 2: Preparation

Understand the Exam Format:
JAMB UTME is a Computer-Based Test (CBT). You'll use a mouse to select answers on a computer screen.
The exam consists of 180 questions in total (60 for Use of English, 40 each for the other three subjects).
The total time allowed is usually 2 hours (sometimes 3 hours, check your registration slip for confirmation).

Study Smart:
JAMB Syllabus: Download and study the official JAMB Syllabus for each of your four subjects. Focus your studies on the topics outlined there.
Past Questions: This is your secret weapon! Get several years' worth of JAMB past questions and practice them religiously. This helps you:
Understand the question patterns and styles.
Manage your time effectively.
Identify your weak areas.
Textbooks: Use recommended textbooks for each subject.
Time Management: Practice answering questions under timed conditions. You have roughly 40-50 seconds per question, so speed and accuracy are key.

Familiarize Yourself with CBT:
Many CBT centers and online platforms offer mock JAMB tests. Take as many as you can. This gets you comfortable with the computer interface, how to navigate between questions, and submitting answers.
Even if you're good with computers, the exam environment can be different. Practice!

Phase 3: Exam Day

Locate Your Center Early:
Visit your exam center a day or two before your exam to confirm its location and assess travel time. Avoid last-minute stress.

Get Adequate Rest:
Sleep well the night before. A tired brain won't perform its best.

Eat a Light Meal:
Don't go hungry, but avoid heavy meals that might make you drowsy.

Dress Code:
Dress simply and comfortably. Avoid anything that might attract unnecessary attention or violate exam rules.

What to Bring:
Your JAMB original registration slip (with your photo and unique barcode).
A biro/pen (for rough work, though most centers provide scratch pads).
A face mask (if required by current health protocols).
Do NOT bring: Phones, smartwatches, calculators (unless specified by JAMB), textbooks, or any unauthorized materials. You will be disqualified.

At the Exam Center:
Arrive at least 30 minutes to an hour before your scheduled time.
Follow instructions from the invigilators strictly.
Biometric verification will be done before you enter the exam hall.

In the Exam Hall:
Listen carefully to all instructions.
Check your computer: Ensure your computer is working correctly. If you notice any issues, call an invigilator immediately.
Start with your strengths: You can navigate between subjects and questions. If you find a subject difficult, move to another, then come back. Don't get stuck on one question.
Read questions carefully: Don't rush through the questions. Understand what's being asked before selecting an answer.
Time Management: Keep an eye on the timer displayed on the screen. Allocate your time wisely across the four subjects.
Answer all questions: There's usually no negative marking for wrong answers, so it's always better to attempt every question, even if you have to guess.
Review: If you finish early, review your answers.

Phase 4: Post-Exam

Results:
JAMB usually releases results a few days or weeks after the exam. You can check it online using your profile code or registration number.

Post-UTME:
If your JAMB score meets your chosen institution's cut-off mark, you'll then prepare for their Post-UTME screening exercise. Each institution has its own process.

My biggest advice for a first-timer: Practice, Practice, Practice! And always rely on official information from JAMB and your chosen institutions. You've got this!
