A man wishes to swim straight across a river 20 metres wide to point X directly opposite him. There is a uniform current of 1/2 metre per second. Find, by scale drawing or calculation, the direction in which the swimmer must head to do this, and the time he would take to reach X, when he swims at a steady speed of 1 metre per second?
