The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish a strategic partnership with Loughborough University, United Kingdom, aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s educational system and strengthening structural development within the sector.

This announcement was made during a high-level meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Sulaibah Sa’id Ahmad, and a delegation from Loughborough University. The visit, which took place on June 16, 2025, marked a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to reposition its education sector through international collaboration.

Professor Ahmad reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to global partnerships as a pathway to educational transformation, stating that no country can thrive in isolation. She emphasized collaboration in key areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), quality education, girl-child education, tackling out-of-school children, and integrating Almajiri education into mainstream learning systems.

The Minister highlighted six priority focus areas for the Ministry and underlined the importance of strengthening existing structures. She also revealed that the government has allocated a substantial budget for research and stressed the need for impactful research outcomes that contribute directly to national development.

“It is not just about conducting the research, but how the research impacts the country. We have put in place a structure to ensure the research benefits the nation,” she said.

Professor Ahmad also welcomed the possibility of reviving previous bilateral scholarship programs but emphasized the need for fully funded initiatives and sustainable engagement models. She further disclosed that two committees on Transnational Education (TNE) have been set up to explore six competitive university partnership models, with decisive actions to be taken based on their findings.

Speaking on behalf of Loughborough University, Professor Sam Grogan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, reiterated the institution’s commitment to meaningful collaboration. He noted that global issues like climate change, environmental challenges, and social crises require sustained international partnerships and practical cooperation.

The meeting concluded with optimism from both parties, signaling a renewed chapter in Nigeria’s education sector, driven by strategic alliances and a vision for long-term impact.
