ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced this in Abuja, explaining that the decision followed productive discussions with the government and interventions from the National Assembly.

The union had embarked on the strike on October 13, 2025, over the government’s failure to act on longstanding demands, including lecturers’ welfare and the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement.

Piwuna disclosed that subsequent meetings with a government team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed on October 16 and 18 yielded notable progress, though not all concerns were resolved. He acknowledged the mediation efforts of Senate Committees on Education and Labour, as well as Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, which helped restore dialogue.

Following a review by ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) between October 21–22, the union resolved to suspend the strike to allow continued engagement. However, ASUU warned that if the government fails to meet its commitments within the next month, the union will resume strike action without further notice.

Piwuna expressed appreciation to students, parents, the media, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their support, urging Nigerians to pressure the government to fulfill its promises and ensure stability in the university system.
