ASUU mobilizes members for a two-week warning strike beginning October 13

The decision, contained in a memo tagged “Strike Bulletin One” and signed by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, comes after a two-week ultimatum issued to the government expired without any meaningful response.

ASUU’s grievances include the non-signing and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, poor funding for university revitalisation, unpaid salary arrears, promotion delays, and outstanding third-party deductions.

Piwuna urged members to remain united and mobilise for the action, stressing that the strike aims to compel the government to act decisively on issues that have lingered for over eight years.

The Federal High Court had earlier directed that both the Ministers of Labour and Education be notified, while ASUU maintains that only coordinated pressure can yield results.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, citing similar grievances including delayed salary payments, unfulfilled agreements, and pending circulars for members’ promotions.

Both unions warned that failure by the government to address their demands could lead to a prolonged industrial action across Nigerian universities.
