The Students' Union Government of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has announced the indefinite suspension of its former President, Mr. Elijah Ekanem, following a directive from the University Senate.

In an official notice released on Wednesday, the Union stated that the Senate, during a meeting held on Tuesday, February 24th, 2026, resolved to suspend Mr. Ekanem as a student of the university. The decision was based on recommendations from the Student Disciplinary Committee.

According to the notice signed by the Union's Secretary General, the disciplinary action stemmed from Mr. Ekanem's refusal to honour invitations to appear before the committee regarding allegations brought against him. The Union was careful to note that the proceedings were conducted by university authorities and the sanction was applied to Mr. Ekanem strictly in his capacity as a student, not as a Union executive.

The suspension as a student has automatic consequences for his leadership role. Citing the Students’ Union Constitution, the notice declared that suspension from the university renders an individual ineligible to hold elective office. Consequently, the office of the President of the Students’ Union has been declared vacant.

In accordance with constitutional succession procedures, the Vice President, Comrade Goodnews Ndioh, has immediately assumed the office of President.

In a separate statement accompanying the notice, the Executive Council of the Students’ Union emphasized that it did not endorse the actions that led to the disciplinary measures. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to "accountability, constitutionalism, and responsible leadership" and pledged to continue representing the student body through lawful and institutional engagement.

The Union leadership urged the student community to remain calm and united, assuring them of stability and continuity under the new leadership of President Goodnews Ndioh.
