Introduction

INTRODUCTION

The students industrial work and experience scheme (SIWES) is a skill training programme wich constitute part of the minimum academic standards for the qualification of Degrees, National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in all the Nigerian Monotechnics, Polytechnics and Universities. This programme is designed to bridge the gap between theory and the practical nature of engineering, technology, medical, agriculture, sciences and other management programmes in the Nigerian tertiary institutions.

PURPOSE OF SIWES

The major aims of SIWES are to expose student to professional working methods relevant to their course of study, the procedures, working principles and maintenance of machines and the general safety of individuals at work as well as the safety of the organizations. The minimum duration of 400 level students studying engineering in the Nigerian Universities is 24 weeks which is about six (6) months.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The main objectives of SIWES are;

1. Provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian universities to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study;

2. Prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation;

3. Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipments and machinery that may not be available in the universities;

4. Make the transition from the university to the world of work easier, and thus enhance students’ contacts for later job placement;

5. Provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation, thereby bridging the gap between university work and the actual practice; and

6. Enlist and strengthen employers’ involvement in the entire educational process of preparing university graduates for the employment industry.

1.3 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF GCOML

In a bid to realise the aims and objectives of SIWES and get proper training to prepare me for the active and competitive Nigerian labour market, I decided to obtain my experience at GRAND CEREALS AND OIL MILLS LIMITED (GCOML) seeing the relationship with my course of study (Agricultural and Environmental Resource Engineering) I was convinced it would provide me with a vast wealth of experience, knowledge, industrial skill and exposure to working methods, equipments and machinery.

GCOML is an integrated foods company whose primary activities is the creation of superior value from local raw materials, with leading brands in the cereals, vegetable oil and animal feed categories. GCOML is a subsidiary of United Africa Company (UAC). In 1997 United Africa Company Nigeria Plc (UACN) a major shareholder in GCOML acquired an 18-acre site located at kilometre 17, Zawan Roundabout, Bukuru, Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria. The company was originally incorporated in 1983; the company was originally designed to produce baking flour from imported wheat. In later years the Federal Government of Nigeria adjusted her import policies and several products were banned, one of which was imported wheat. Following the ban on imported wheat, GCOML modified its operation and production, and today, it has grown in the production of cereal mill, oil mill and feed mill. It has steadfastly engaged in many value-added agricultural based industrial activities that has consistently delivered to consumers high quality cereals, oils and feeds via careful application of internationally standard acclaimed techniques to manufacture premium products

The core activities carried out at GCOML factory takes place through the operation of the following production units:

1) CEREAL MILL: capable of processing maize into flour, grits and offal as by-products. The cereal mill also clean sorghum for other industries on a commercial rate

2) OIL MILL: capable of processing groundnuts, soya beans, palm kernel and cotton seeds into quality deodorized oil and processing the by-products which include cakes, soap stocks and lecithin into other raw materials

3) ANIMAL FEED MILL: capable of reprocessing the by-products (bran and cake) from the cereal mill and oil mills into pelletized poultry, cow, pig and fish feed on request

Being an attaché in the engineering department of GCOML, I worked with a team of engineers and technicians in eight (8) sections of the industry, namely; cereal mill, oil mill, feed mill 1 and 2, fish mill, engineering workshop, forklift and boiler house (utility)

This report gives detailed account of the production process of the various mills, their machines and equipments, the working principle of the machines, work undertaken by me and the wealth of experience gained, safety and environmental pollution control.
