Abstract:
The 2023 general elections in Nigeria was a critical moment for examining the implications of Naira redesign on vote buying, a pervasive electoral challenge that compromises the integrity of democratic processes. This study investigates the complex interplay between currency redesign and vote buying practices, aiming to provide insights into the prevalence, patterns, and dynamics of vote buying among voters in the context of the redesigned Naira.

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data from a representative sample of voters and key informants. The study explores voters' perceptions of the redesigned Naira, its potential influence on voting decisions, and the strategies employed by political actors in vote buying attempts.
Findings reveal that vote buying remains a persistent challenge in Nigerian elections, with significant variations based on socioeconomic factors. Voters from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are found to be more vulnerable to vote buying, highlighting the need to address underlying disparities to safeguard electoral integrity.

The impact of Naira redesign on vote buying behavior is ambivalent, with some respondents perceiving enhanced security features as a deterrent, while others suggest minimal effects. The adaptability of political actors and the efficacy of enforcement measures are identified as crucial factors influencing the currency's influence on vote buying.

The study provides actionable recommendations for policymakers and electoral stakeholders to combat vote buying effectively. Strengthening electoral regulations, enhancing voter education and awareness, promoting transparency in electoral administration, fostering civic engagement, and continuous evaluation of interventions are key strategies to uphold the integrity of the 2023 general elections.

The implications of Naira redesign on vote buying extend beyond the electoral sphere, impacting democratic representation and governance. 1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Vote buying, the practice of exchanging money or goods for votes during elections, has been a persistent challenge in many democracies, including Nigeria. It undermines the integrity of the electoral process, distorts the will of the people, and compromises the democratic principles of fairness and transparency. As Nigeria prepares for the 2023 general elections, there is a growing discourse on how to tackle this issue effectively.
In an announcement made by the Central Bank of Nigeria governor on October 26, 2022, it was disclosed that new Naira notes would be introduced to replace the existing denominations of 200, 500, and 1,000 Naira notes. The redesign was scheduled to come into effect on Thursday, December 15, 2022 few weeks to the 2023 general elections. This research study examines the effects of the currency redesign on vote buying, quality and integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria.

The redesign of the Naira, the currency of Nigeria, would unlikely have a direct impact on vote buying in the 2023 general elections among voters. Vote buying refers to the practice of exchanging money or goods for votes during elections. It is a complex issue influenced by various factors such as political culture, socioeconomic conditions, and the effectiveness of electoral laws and enforcement.
Currency redesign, on the other hand, involves changes to the physical appearance or security features of banknotes. While it can help deter counterfeiting and improve the overall efficiency of transactions, it is not directly linked to the issue of vote buying. Vote buying primarily occurs through the distribution of cash, gifts, or other incentives by political actors to influence voter behavior.

To address the issue of vote buying, efforts should focus on strengthening electoral processes, enforcing electoral laws, and promoting transparency and accountability. Measures such as voter education, increased monitoring, and stricter enforcement of campaign finance regulations can help reduce the incidence of vote buying. These initiatives involve comprehensive electoral reforms that go beyond currency redesign alone.
It's worth noting that the effectiveness of any measures to curb vote buying depends on the commitment of political actors, civil society organizations, and the general public to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
