Abstract:
This study identified the impact of economic recession on public project delivery in Ekiti state, Nigeria. Economic recession is a barrier to the completion of project delivery. This is a common issue encountered in the construction industry across the globe most especially in developing countries. Ekiti-State, more than 15% of construction projects experienced more than five months of delay while some were abandoned as a result of economic recession. Hence, the study of the impact of economic recession on public project delivery is very important in order to minimize the delay in the number of project delivery. This study identified the major causes of economic recession in Nigeria and as well suggested key strategies for firms to survive in an economic recession. A descriptive research design is undertaken for this study while stratified sampling techniques were used via the use of self-administered questionnaires to obtain relevant information.

The population of the study includes Architects, Builders, Quantity Surveyors, Civil Engineers, and other professionals that are fully involved in construction projects. A total number of 60 questionnaires were distributed to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure including the three leading construction firms in Ado-Ekiti out of which fifty-two (52) questionnaires were received. The data collected was analyzed by descriptive statistical tools using frequency, percentage, mean, and relative importance index (RII). The study revealed that the major cause of economic recession in Nigeria is poor economic planning. It also revealed that time overrun is the most rated impact of economic recession on public projects executed in Ekiti State. Finally, the retrenchment strategy was rated most as the key strategy for firms to survive in a recession.
