Abstract:
The student industrial work experience scheme established by the federal government of Nigeria
was aimed at exposing students of higher institution to require industrial skill and practical
experience in their approved courses of study and also to prepare the student for the industrial
work situation which they are likely to meet after graduation.
This technical report is based on the experiences gained during my six months of industrial training
at P.H.C Better Life Hospital, Ondo, Ondo state. This report highlights how patients are being
managed and also the several tests carried out for patients such as: Packed cell volume (PCV),
Widal test, (typhoid test), Blood sugar test, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Blood grouping test, Malaria
test, Pregnancy test, Urinalysis test and Retroviral screening (RVS) test.
I was permitted to work in the laboratory alone which exposed me to the safety precautions, rules
and regulation, and the various test analysis most importantly, it describes the activities and my
experience gained during the period of the training.

Introduction:
1.0 INTRODUCTION OF SWIES

The Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skill training program designed to expose and prepare students of universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education for the industrial work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The scheme also affords students the opportunity familiarizing and exposing themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that are usually not available in their institutions.
1.1 HISTORY OF SIWES

Before establishment of the scheme, there was a growing among our industrialists that graduates of institutions of higher learning lacked adequate practical background studies preparatory for industries employment. Thus, the employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education gang on in higher institution was not responsive to the needs of the employers of labor. It s against this background that the rationale of initiating and designing the scheme by the fund during its 1 formative year- (1973/1974), the schemes was introduced to acquaint students with the skills of handling employers’ equipment and machinery. The ITF solely funded the schemes during its formative years. But as the financial involvement became unbearable to the fund, it withdrew from the schemes in 1978. The federal government handed over the scheme in 1979 to both the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the National University Commission (NUC). Later, the federal government in November 1984 revert the management and
implementation of the scheme to ITF and it was effectively taken over by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in July 1985 with the funding being solely borne by the federal government.
