The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) was established on October 1, 1980 under the democratic dispensation of President Shehu Shagari in response to the need for the development of a technology â€“ based economy, which required skilled, innovative and technology-oriented manpower.

FUTO had a humble beginning at the premises of the Government Technical College, Owerri with a few staff borrowed from the Imo State Civil Service and Professor Umaru D. Gowmwalk as its first Vice-Chancellor.

The University later moved to its temporary site at the Lake Nwaebere campus where it opened its doors for its first intake of students in October 1981. FUTO operated on the Lake Nwaebere campus up till the 1992/93 session when it relocated to its permanent site situated about 25 kilometers south of Owerri Metropolis.

The academic programmes and schools have grown from initial few Departments and Schools to the present 36 Departments and 6 Schools:

School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT)
School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET)
School of Management Technology (SMAT)
School of Science (SOSC)
School of Health Science and Technology (SHST) and,
School of Environmental Science and Technology (SEST).

FUTO is located in a unique and serene natural environment. It experiences two weather seasons, the Rainy season which takes place from April to October and the Dry season taking place from November to about April. The temperatures can get as low as 200C in the night and as high as 350C during the day. It also experiences moderate rainfall during the rainy season. It is criss- crossed by the Otamiri river, presenting a unique opportunity for tourism, aquatics, aquaculture e.t.c.
The University remains the foremost university of technology in the south eastern part of Nigeria.

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri came to maturity when in December 1986, it turned out its first batch of 67 graduates from the School of Science. The number of graduates increased to 175 during the 1986/87 session and has continued to increase to over 20000 graduates in the 2005/2006 session. It also graduates its first batch of postgraduate students numbering 11. The expansion of FUTO has been in all dimensions. Staff population has grown from the ten (10) borrowed from the Imo State Civil Service in 1980/91 to over 3500 during the 2005/2006 academic year. Similarly, the number of academic staff has grown from an initial population of 23 in the 1981/82 session to over 400 in the 2005/2006 session. Presently, the University has over 200 technical staff, about 500 administrative staff, and over 924 junior staff. The Federal University of Technology, Owerri has indeed come a long way. It has moved from a squatting position at the Government Technical College to a semi-sitting position at its Lake Nwaebere Campus and now it is almost well settled at its Permanent Site.
