Abstract:
This study sought to examine family type and academic performance among secondary school students in Shomolu Local Government Area of Lagos State. It looks at variables such as gender of single parent, divorce, parental separation and step parent family as factors influencing academic performance among secondary school students.

The theories adopted were attachment theory, structural functionalism and ecological systems theory. The quantitative method was used, and the sampling method used was the probability sampling technique. Specifically, the multi-stage sampling technique adopted was the survey method.

The data collected from the field were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The result shows that there is no relationship between gender of single parent and academic performance, neither is there any significant relat1ionship between divorce and academic performance, also there was no relationship between step parent and academic performance.
However, other findings signify that there is a relationship between step parent family and academic performance. Recommendations were made based on findings from the study.
