Abstract:
Africa is exposed to a wide range of technological opportunities to address its human development challenges. Technologies such as information and communication technologies, biotechnology and nanotechnology can be harnessed and applied to increase food production, fight diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, and increase economic competitiveness of the continent. However, most African countries lack the requisite scientific and technological capabilities to effectively engage in the application of science, technology and innovation for development.
This paper scrolls through the phases of engineering in Africa, how far and how well it has gone. The challenges facing development of engineering in Africa are also recognized, causes noted, and possible remedies proffered.

Introduction:
Engineering is the application of mathematics, empirical evidence and scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, and processes.
The discipline of engineering is extremely broad, and encompasses a range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied science, technology and types of application.
The term Engineering is derived from the Latin ingenium, meaning "cleverness" and ingeniare, meaning "to contrive, devise".
Another definition;
Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.
4.0 PROBLEMS OF ENGINEERING IN AFRICA
All the achievements described were made by engineers, without whom life would have been difficult then. Same as now, so the role of the engineer in the african society cannot be overlooked.
The engineer in an African society is however faced with many difficulties which include;
Political Instability
Lack of Science and Technology Education
