Introduction
WHAT IS POLLUTION
Pollution is the contamination of harmful substance to the environment. It is the introduction of contaminant into the natural environment that causes adverse change. Pollution can take a form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. The components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Pollution is often classed as point source or non point source pollution.
FORMS OF POLLUTIONS
Air pollution:- the release of chemicals, particulate matters and biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to Humans, other living organism or cause damage to the natural Environment.
Causes Of Air pollution
Human Activities
• Industries
• Vehicle Exhaust
• Energy Sources
• Wild Fires
• Volcano
• Tornadoes
CHEMICAL POLLUTION
Chemical pollution is when a certain compounds are left or disposed of in the environment. The chemicals disrupt the processes of the ecosystem. This causes the biological element to be killed or harmed. Plants and animals produce countless chemical substances as part of their life processes. For the purposes of the Ocean Health Index, ‘chemical’ refers to a compound or substance that has been purified or manufactured by human sources. More than 100,000 chemicals are used commercially (Daly 2006), and many enter the marine environment via atmospheric transport, runoff into waterways, or direct disposal into the ocean. Three general categories of chemicals are of particular concern in the marine environment: oil spills, toxic metals, and persistent organic pollutants
Categories of chemical pollutions;
- Oil Spills (Urban Based Runoff, Operational Fuel Discharge Oil spills).
- Toxic Metals: Industrial and Mining Activities (Atmospheric input) Waste Dumps
- Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS): Pesticides, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Bisphenol A (BPA).
