Abstract:
ABSTRACT
The choice of place of birth is a crucial determinant in averting complications related to pregnancy, labour and delivery. The services of skilled health practitioner is also important in ensuring safety of the mother and the baby. This is very important because majority of the complications that result in maternal death occur during or shortly after delivery. Therefore, the study seeks to identify the determinants of choiceof birthplace among child-bearing age in some selected communities in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria.
A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 244 respondents that were selected through multistage sampling technique. The sampling size was determined using the Leslie fishers formula for calculation the sample size in a cross sectional study (Naing et al, 2006). A self-developed, validated questionnaire was used to obtain data from the respondents and the response rate was 82%.
Data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics with level of significance set at 5% (0.05). The data were presented in tables and chart. This results revealed that majority (63%) of the respondents had their last baby delivered in a health care facility. Nearly half (47.5%) of the decision to choose a particular birth place were made by the women themselves and (23.0%) were made by their husbands. The major factors identified by the respondents that determined their choice of birth place were availability of better delivery equipment (68.5%), clean and safe environment (65.5%), conducive health care facility (64.5%), best approach by the health providers (62.0%), distance of maternity center to the house (53.0%) and cost of delivery (53.0%).The study also revealed that there was no significant association between parity, religion and the choice of birth place. However, significant association was found between the respondent‟s level of education, and choice of birth place with p=0.027.
The study concluded that appropriately staffed health care facility is the choice birth place for majority of the respondents and the decision to deliver in the chosen health facility were mainly determined by the women themselves.
It was recommended that government should organize a campaign to further enlighten the pregnant women and also the masses on the important of hospital delivery and on the complications of home delivery by unskilled professionals. The various complications associated with home delivery should be emphasized during antenatal.

Introduction:
Introduction (Brief Version)

The choice of birth and place of delivery among women of childbearing age is vital to maternal and child health. In Ilorin Metropolis, these choices are influenced by factors such as education, cultural beliefs, income level, access to health facilities, and past experiences. Despite improvements in healthcare services, many women still deliver at home or with traditional birth attendants. Understanding these determinants is essential to promote safe delivery practices and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in the region.
