Introduction

Patient care refers to the prevention, treatment and management of illness and the preservation of physical and mental wellbeing through services offered by medical and allied health professions1. The term patient care is also used to refer to the treatment and management of a certain bodily disorder with the aim of restoring both the physical and mental wellbeing of individual. It can be used synonymously with the term healthcare. Patient care is also a term that refers to a medical provider treating you as a person, with compassion, personal attention, comfort and concern.

Radiology services are essential to the care of patients2. To the patients, however, radiology services may seem some what inconvenient, mysterious, or frightening or may even be painful intrusion of their privacy. In addition, radiology services are subject to the preconceived notions and demands that people have about any services they patronize. With radiology, the perception is further altered by that fact that patients typically do not choose radiologist of their choice but made by the referring physician, the health plan or another intermediary. Often patients and their diagnostic radiologist never meet. This situation substantially alters the service bond between them-actually making the relationship more demanding in a number of ways3. Lack of direct patient contact also has potential to cause radiologists to disassociate their professional actions from patient as an individual. This tendency toward depersonalization has the potential to be counter productive and to detract from the public’s perception of radiologists as physicians and of radiography as a discipline.

Reliability relates directly to the provision of consistently accurate interpretations of radiologic examinations that relate appropriately to the clinical context in which the examination was ordered.

The correct examination must be performed and the correct views must be obtained to answer as many of the pertinent clinical questions as possible on a consistent basis. The radiologic interpretations and communication of these results must consistently be of high quality, regardless of which radiologist in a group is providing a particular service. High-quality service must be available at all times, including nights, weekends, and holidays. With respect to responsiveness, timeliness is critical in the provision of radiologic services, as it is in the non medical service industry. Timeliness in radiology practice is reflected in patients’ accessibility to procedures and the availability of reports after procedure.

Regarding empathy, people who are vulnerable, fragile, emotional, this includes most patients- want to communicate and interact with responsible caring people even in the electronically sophisticated era in which we live. Patients want and used to be treated as individuals by other individuals, rather than as items by an impersonal organization. Large organizational size does not necessarily mean that personalized empathetic care cannot be rendered.

Without the patient, the establishment of hospital becomes unjustifiable and fruitless. It is inarguable known that the patient is the first citizen and as far as the hospital is concerned. He is in need of help, the nature of help needed may vary between individual and in a particular individual at different times at one point needs someone that can offer the required help.

With regards to cultural considerations, all patients deserve the same quality of care, regardless of native language, race or ethnicity. Furthermore, providing substandard care because of cultural or language barriers is a form of discrimination. Culture affects many aspects of the care process. A patient’s culture defines not only who he or she is but also how he or she interacts with health care information.
