Abstract:
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the Availability and Utilization of computer Laboratory Facilities for effective teaching and learning of computer studies in junior secondary schools in Etinan L.G.A. Three research questions guided the study. The population consisted of 860 final year students. The respondents (164 final year students) were selected using purposive random sampling technique. The instruments for data collection were a checklist and a questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using percentages, means and standard deviation. The findings revealed that most of the computer laboratory facilities needed for the learning of computer science are not available. It was also revealed that the few facilities that were available were underutilized by the students. In view of the findings, recommendations were put forward on how to improve computer laboratory facilities availability and utilization at secondary schools for the betterment of teaching and learning of computer studies. Conclusions were drawn from the findings.

1.1 Background to the Study
In Nigeria and other countries in the world, education is perceived as a tool for socioeconomic and political development as such it should be accorded the necessary attention. This position is strengthened in the Nigerian National Policy of education, which stated that education is an instrument par excellence for effecting national development. Schools is a social organization where the future of citizens are shaped and developed through the process of teaching and learning.
Traditionally, computer laboratories have been configured to support teaching and learning by providing rows of computers in a lecture-style classroom set-up (Van den Blink, 2015).
The computer science laboratory has a direct effect on both student attitude and academic performance as per the instructions theory and learning interaction. It is generally believed that constant practice leads to proficiency in what the learner learns during classroom interaction. Therefore, the quality of teaching and learning experience depends on the extent of the adequacy of computer laboratory facilities in secondary schools and the teachers’ effectiveness in the use of these laboratory facilities with the aim of facilitating and providing meaningful learning experiences in the learners.
