Introduction:
Communication as a concept deals with the link between communities in the formation of a large whole, a metropolis, a province or a nation, it is not only man that communicates, animals also communicate through gesture, attention, grapping colours, flashing light and complex scent. Man communicates through the exchange of symbols ascribing meaning to them and interpreting them. On this basis, we could say that communication is the exchange and interpretation of meaningful symbols between the sender and receiver through a medium, communication is also seen as the process by which one person (or a group) shares or imports information to another person (or group) so that both people and group clearly understand one another.
The main concern of communication is to transfer message from one place to another using a medium that best suit the message and with the hope of getting a feedback or a reaction. Therefore communication can be define as ‘’the exchange of meaningful symbols and signals between the sender (Source) and the receiver (destination) through a medium with the hope of a feedback which could be immediate or delayed”. (Curran et al 1979).(1)
As people communicate between themselves they employ the means that best convey the messages, these could be spoken languages, smiles, frowns smokes, signal, numbers, alphabets, gunshots, flutes, or other things that they believe will best convey their message.
The mass media is a large audience medium of communication that deals with a large group over who may not be able to exercise control. It operates on a large scale, reaching and involving virtually everyone in a society to a greater or lesser degree, it is a large scale medium, channel or instrument through which something (information, message, and signal) is transmitted or carried, mass media are the main channels of communication in modern society.
Mass media as an organized means of communicating openly and at a distance to many receivers within a short space of time, it is the quest to reach a large population in this modern time that makes the development of mass media to thrive their capacity is so great that the structure of society is fundamentally altered by their existence.
The mass media comprise of television, radio, newspaper, magazine, books, journals, movies and now internet, they are not personal communication and they have the ability to reach large audiences, affecting the perception and behavior of members of a society in distinct way. The mass media because of their size and reach have tremendous impact on society, it is for this reason that Murphy (1977) cited in Daramola (2005) summarized the societal impacts as oil, glue, and dynamite.(2)
As oil, the mass media can keep the running society while assisting individuals to adjust and settle down to the society of their lives, while as a glue the media foster social cohesion and helps maintain it, media also provide everybody with something to talk about by setting agenda of discussion.
The media industry that specialize in producing media packages meant to principally entertain viewers through reflections on real life situations or fictional imagination of the movie makers, in a relax and mostly conducive atmosphere, also referred to as home video. The home video has come to be accepted by majority of viewers as an opportunity for relaxation at home or in designated recreation centres (like gardens, parks, clubs, cinemas etc.).
Therefore to have a clear understanding of culture, one must make a distinction among ideas, objects, and actions. Culture is seen as the realm of ideas whereas social phenomenon describes objects and actions, while social objects and action lead to cultural ideas.
The mass media uses the people in the society for the day to day running of its activities, the people make the news, the society (government) provides the facilities, the society needs the mass media to progress in respect of the media providing them information, entertainment and education.
Therefore an attempt will be made in this study to bring into focus the effects of Western culture in “Kannywood” movies on the community of Zaria city. It is because of the great importance attached to cultural heritage that this study will be undertaken so that those acts that go along with the values of Hausa culture and Religion could be Glorified and those that go beyond the limit of what is morally and legally accepted could be assessed.
