Introduction:

Abstract

This study was designed to survey the level of Medical Radiography awareness and perception and career decision of the science secondary school students in Kogi State and the primary factors determining their career choice. The study was a cross-sectional survey. Respondents in this study included all consenting male and female science based science senior secondary school students (SSS I-III) in Kogi State and 13 schools were involved in this study. A total of 620 copies of the questionnaire was distributed by hand, 600 copies were properly filled and retrieved by the same means. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics using tables, frequency and percentages, pie charts, bar charts and chi-square (level of significance) test. The level of significance was set at p = 0.05.Out of the respondents examined on awareness about Medical Radiography only 134(22.3%) and 440(73.3%). The total number of respondents that did chose Medical Radiography as a possible career choice was 134 (22.7%) as represented in table 2 while the same table still put the of value of those that did not radiography at 464(77.3%).The respondents gave various reasons they choose Medical radiography ranging from interest, good salary, moderate lifestyle of radiographers, parental counsel et cetera. The rest of the respondents that did not choose Radiography also gave reasons since the questionnaire was structured thus. The reasons were: ‘I am not interested’, ‘I don’t like it’, ‘I don’t know much about it’, ‘my parents will decide for me’, ‘I don’t have a reason’. Result from this study shows that out of the possible career options, majority of the respondents of the prefer Medicine and Surgery, Engineering, etc. On what of who a radiographer is? Only 180(30%) were able to identify correctly ,9% answered Geographer and 43.5% have no idea all at.It can be concluded that the knowledge of senior secondary school students on the medical radiography as a profession was poor and this is substantiated in chapter four.
