HISTORY

Igbinedion University Okada is a private university in Nigeria. Located at Okada Wonderland, a town beside Benin City, Edo state. The university was founded by Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, a millionaire, philanthropist and local leader.

Igbinedion University Okada marks the realisation of the dream of Sir, Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin kingdom, to bequeath to future generations a University with international standard where academic calendar is faithfully run without interruption.

The university came into existence following the presentation of a certificate of approval on the 16th of May 1999 by the Federal Government (Certificate No. 001). Thus Igbinedion University became the first licensed Private University in Nigeria. The foundation students arrived at Okada on Friday 15th October 1999.

The university since then has without interruption upheld its desire to advance the frontiers of knowledge and reinstate the dignity and quality of university Education in Nigeria. Since its inception, the Igbinedion University has been recognised as a major force in the Nigerian higher education scene through its high quality degree courses.

The University continues to have extensive and rewarding links with industry commerce and a number of other prestigious Universities both at home and worldwide for the benefit of its students.

The University runs a collegiate system under which each college is designed to be ultimately autonomous. Each college houses schools and departments, which are chaired by Deans and Heads of Departments respectively. The affairs of the college are managed by the Provost/Dean, College Board, and various standing and ad hoc committees approved by Senate.

There are seven colleges, namely, Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Natural and Applied Sciences, as well as the General Abdulsalami Abubakar College of Engineering, the Oba Okunade Sijuade College of Health Sciences, the Professor Dora Akunyili College of Pharmacy, and the Oba Erediauwa College of Law. Five of these colleges â€“ Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Health Sciences, Law and Natural and Applied Sciences â€“ were foundation colleges and commenced in 1999/2000.

The College of Engineering commenced its programmes in the 2002/2003 academic year, and Pharmacy in 2004. The College of Health Sciences has two schools, namely, Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Medicine. There is also the School of Diplomacy and International Security Studies, which is housed in the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The Oba Erediauwa College of Law, which is the only approved and accredited Law programme in a private university in Nigeria, turned out its first crop of graduates in 2004. The 23 of them in that set posted 100 per cent success at the Nigerian Law School where law graduates get the call to bar. One of the 30 in the second set of IUOâ€™s law graduates, Mr. Damilola Sunday Olawuyi, who passed with First Class Honours from the university, also graduated with a First Class Honours Degree from the Nigerian Law School in 2006.
