HISTORY

Covenant University is a private university in Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. It was founded in 2002 by the Winners' Chapel (Living Faith Church Worldwide), and the chancellor, David Oyedepo, is also the President and founding Bishop of the Winners' Chapel. It is a Christian institution and it strictly governed by the principles of Christ. The vision of the Founding Bishop as reflected in the motto of the institution is "to raise a new generation of leaders".

The educational philosophy of the institution is to cause a revolution in the educational system of Nigeria, Africa and indeed the World. It is situated within the premises of Cannanland; the official Headquarters of the Living Faith Church, and it is known as Hebron-the Birth Place of Kings and Queens.

The university has two colleges housing over 20 departments. The colleges are the College of Development Studies and the College of Science and Technology. The Vice-Chancellor is Professor Aize Obayan, the Registrar is Pastor Rotimi Daniel and the Chaplain is Pastor Ubong Ntia.

As of 2007, the university has about 7,000 students from different countries. Its graduates are called "Eagles".

Recently, the school was forced by Nigerian education authorities and other human rights groups to stop compulsory HIV and pregnancy tests for all its graduating students before they are allowed to graduate.

The University which is at the Forefront of private Tertiary Learning in Nigeria aims at Marrying academic and Intellectual Success with good Spiritual Values. This it has shown effectively by Putting Spirituality as the Arrowhead of its Seven Core values which apart from Spirituality also Include, Integrity, possibility Mentality, Capacity Building, Responsibility, Diligence and Sacrifice Respectively.
The Founder and Chancellor of the university has times without number reinstated the fact that the institution was not laying down spirituality as The Arrowhead of its Core values for want of Fear or Favor. In his own words "Covenant University is A GOD-VARSITY not a University. Anyone without true love for God and Spirituality is Free to Leave".

Also in a bid to Instill Good spiritual and Ethical Values in the Students, the Institution has added to its curriculum the Total Man Concept (TMC)Course which focuses on making the students not only realize their life purpose but also actualize their lifeâ€™s purpose. The course is pivoted around the belief that a truly purposeful life does not come in amassing mass wealth and estate but in the sacrifice made to better the course of humanity. Also Covenant University is also known to be the Harvard of Africa and is looking to attain this status in the nearest future. Covenant University also provides its student with entrepreneurial skills by offering them a course called EDS (ENTERPRENUERAL DEVELOPMENT STUDIES).This provide the entire student with the skills to enable them not to be handicapped in the labor market or to be economically independent. A variety of courses are offered with a very good and sound infrastructure.
