Explanation

In Alex Agyei-Agyiri’s Unexpected Joy at Dawn, Mama Orojo is a central figure whose character embodies resilience, spiritual devotion and the painful search for identity amidst the political upheaval of the 1983 expulsions between Ghana and Nigeria. She serves as a moral and emotional anchor in the novel, and our impression of her is formed through several key traits:

Mama Orojo is immediately presented as a woman of substance and industry. Based in Lagos, she has built a successful construction business and is a prominent member of the Amen Christi Church. Her financial independence is a testament to her hard work and intelligence, allowing her to navigate a male-dominated business world. This success, however, is contrasted with the "second-class" status she faces because of her Ghanaian ancestry, despite having lived in Nigeria for decades.

Her spirituality is a defining characteristic. As a leader in the Amen Christi Church, she uses her faith to find peace in a turbulent society. However, her faith is not just ritualistic; it is a source of strength that guides her decisions, including her philanthropic efforts and her conduct during the "Aliens Must Go" decree. Her devotion provides a sense of belonging that the state tries to strip away through its xenophobic policies.

Despite her success in Nigeria, Mama Orojo is a character defined by a profound sense of loss. She is haunted by the memories of her family—specifically her brother, Nii Tackie, whom she was separated from during the 1969 expulsion of aliens from Ghana. Her primary motivation throughout the plot is the search for her roots and her lost brother. This long-suffering loyalty shows a woman who values blood ties above material wealth, eventually leading her to return to a Ghana she barely remembers.

Mama Orojo is a victim of the "see-saw" of West African politics. Having been forced out of Ghana in 1969, she faces the same fate in Nigeria in 1983. Our impression of her is one of quiet dignity; she does not become bitter, but instead meticulously plans her move and manages her assets. She represents the "un-belonging" of the thousands of people who were caught between the borders of two nations that both claimed they did not belong.

Toward the end of the novel, we see a more personal side of Mama Orojo through her relationship with Joe. This adds a layer of human warmth to her character, showing that despite her maturity and professional exterior, she still seeks companionship and personal happiness.

Mama Orojo is an embodiment of the West African migrant experience. She is an impressive figure: strong, wealthy and devout, yet vulnerable to the whims of nationalist politics. Through her, Agyei-Agyiri explores the theme that "home" is not necessarily where a passport says you belong, but where your heart and family reside. She is the moral conscience of the novel, reminding the reader of the human cost of political intolerance.
