AFRICAN DRAMA: THE LION AND THE JEWEL
Show why Baroka opposes the construction of the railway.
In "The Lion and the Jewel," Baroka opposes the construction of the railway because he believes it will bring modernization and cultural change that threatens his traditional authority and power in the village. He sees the railway as a symbol of Western influence that will diminish the value of traditional customs and beliefs. Baroka fears losing his status as the "Lion" of the village and is determined to maintain his dominance over the people by resisting any outside forces that could challenge his leadership.
