Night children suggest several possibilities; the insects and animals whose cries make the night terrifying, armed robbers who work under the covering of night, evil forces or spiritual beings which are believed to operate at night. However, the poet uses the word 'haunt' which primarily pertains to a ghost of spirits.
'Spirit beings' is therefore the best answer.
