The answer is "innuendo" yet there is a grey area that needs more explanation especially for those who might have misconstrued the idea of what innuendo is. An innuendo is an indirect hint on something improper. It is also an insinuation about a person or thing. This insinuation could be derogatory or abusive in a way. Now let's consider the expression once more. "...fights by the book of arithmetic" is an expression taken from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It looks vague because it is not taken in full. The expression simply suggests mastery or expertise. It is like saying one has mastered the arithmetic ( style) of fighting whereas there are many better things to have mastered other than fighting. It is a reference to a book written by Gerard Thibault, a Dutch man and a contemporary of William Shakespeare who after learning swordmandhip (fencing) in Spain travelled back to Netherlands to write his own book entitled The Arithmetic of Fighting (English translation). Shakespeare alludes to this man in his play Romeo and Juliet using the name Tybalt, a cognate of Thibault in Dutch. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is dying after being injured by Tybalt who is skilled in nothing else but fighting. As Mercutio dies, he hints or alludes to the book of arithmetic probably read by his opponent, Tybalt. This is an indirect remark or hint which provides us with the knowledge of something unpleasant ( the book of arithmetic). In full the expression reads thus: "a braggart, a rogue, a villain that fights by the book of arithmetic."
