Explanation

Here are five mistakes committed in democratic governance that often give cause for military intervention:

1. Widespread Corruption and Economic Mismanagement

When democratic leaders engage in systemic embezzlement of public funds, it leads to economic stagnation and high inflation. When the "common man" can no longer afford basic necessities due to the greed of political elites, the military often intervenes under the guise of "cleaning up" the government and restoring economic sanity.

2. Electoral Malpractice and Political Instability

Rigged elections, voter intimidation, and the refusal to hand over power peacefully undermine the legitimacy of a democracy. When the ballot box is seen as ineffective for changing leadership, it creates a political vacuum. The military may step in to "restore order" following post-election violence or a complete breakdown of law and order.

3. Disregard for the Rule of Law and Judicial Independence

Democratic governance relies on checks and balances. When the executive arm starts to disregard court orders, harass the opposition, or manipulate the constitution to extend their tenure (often called "third-termism"), it signals the end of true democracy. This institutional decay is frequently cited by coup leaders as a reason to "save" the country from tyranny.

4. Tribalism, Nepotism, and Sectionalism

If a democratic government is perceived as favoring one ethnic or religious group over others in terms of appointments and resource allocation, it creates deep-seated resentment. In a pluralistic state, such sectionalism can lead to ethnic tensions or civil war. The military may intervene to prevent national disintegration or to "rebalance" the state.

5. Failure to Address Insecurity and Insurgency

A fundamental duty of the state is to provide security. If a democratic government fails to properly equip the armed forces or lacks the political will to tackle rising insurgency, terrorism, or banditry, the military leadership may feel that they can handle the security crisis better by taking direct control of the government.
