Explanation

Here are five ways diplomacy is important to the development of Nigeria:

1. Attraction of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)

Economic diplomacy is a pillar of Nigeria's foreign policy. Through its embassies and high commissions, Nigeria negotiates bilateral trade agreements and investment treaties. This creates a favorable environment for multinational corporations to invest in key sectors like telecommunications, energy, and manufacturing, which creates jobs and boosts the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

2. Regional Security and Counter-Terrorism

Nigeria utilizes diplomacy to lead and participate in regional security frameworks, such as the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and ECOWAS peace missions. By maintaining strong diplomatic ties with neighbors like Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, Nigeria can coordinate cross-border military intelligence and operations to combat threats like Boko Haram and banditry.

3. Strengthening Regional Integration (ECOWAS and AfCFTA)

As a "Big Brother" in Africa, Nigeria uses diplomacy to drive regional integration. Diplomatic efforts were central to the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By lowering trade barriers and harmonizing customs regulations with other African states, Nigeria expands the market for its local businesses and eases the movement of people and goods.

4. Access to International Aid and Technical Cooperation

Through multilateral diplomacy at the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU), Nigeria secures essential support for its development goals. This includes access to international grants for healthcare (such as polio eradication programs), technical expertise in agricultural modernization, and support for environmental initiatives like the Great Green Wall project to combat desertification.

5. Protection and Empowerment of the Diaspora

Nigeria’s "Citizen Diplomacy" focus ensures that the government protects the rights of Nigerians living abroad. This is vital for development because the Nigerian diaspora is a massive source of remittances—billions of dollars sent home annually that support local consumption and small-scale investments. Diplomatic missions facilitate this by ensuring Nigerians abroad are treated fairly and can contribute to national growth.
