The 1963 Republican Constitution ended Nigeria's relationship with the British monarchy; the Queen of England was no longer the head of state and was replaced by an elected President.
While the president became the head of state, the Prime Minister remained the head of government, as the constitution retained the parliamentary system. Another key feature was making the Supreme Court of Nigeria the final court of appeal, replacing the British Privy Council.
