Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the founder and first leader of the Action Group (AG), which was established in March 1951. The party grew out of a cultural organisation called Egbe Omo Oduduwa and became a major political force in the Western Region.
Awolowo led the party through the pre-independence era and served as the first Premier of the Western Region starting in 1954.
