The constitution that introduced the Presidential system in Nigeria is the 1979 Constitution. Before 1979, Nigeria's civilian rule was characterised by a Parliamentary system where the powers of hthe ead of state and head of government are divided. In the First Republic (1963-66), the Head of State was Nnamdi Azikwe while the head of government was Prime Minister Alhaji Tafawa Balewa. However, in 1979, Nigeria chose to adopt the Presidential System just like the United States of America. The first executive president in Nigeria was Shehu Shagari.
