Military intervention was first witnessed on the 25th of January, 1966 when General Aguiyi Ironsi took power from the then Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa. He immediately suspended the constitution and established a unitary system of government. 

The military claimed that the reason for its intervention was to quell the ethnic tension in the country as well as stop corruption.
