What has been the role of Nigeria as a member of the United Nations Organisation?
The role of Nigeria as a member of the United Nations Organisation:
(i) Nigeria, as a sovereign nation and after her admission as the 99th member of U.N.O. has contributed immensely to the realization of the goals of the organisation, e.g. Nigeria is a member of the specialised agencies of the U.N.O.
(ii) Nigeria has at different times occupied different distinctive positions in the world body, e.g. the President of the General Assembly, President of the International Court of Justice, Chairman of the Anti-apartheid Committee, etc.
(iii) In the area of the promotion of international peace and security, Nigeria is a member of Non-aligned movement, a body that, works in alliance with U.N.O. in enhancing peace and security globally and denouncing countries that form military alliances with either N.A.T.O. or WARSAW. It has at one time, served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
(iv) In peace keeping operations, Nigeria has contributed in sending troops to some troubled spots in the world, e.g Lebanon, Somalia, the Congo, Liberia, etc.
(v) Nigeria is regarded as a frontline state because of her role in the dismantling of apartheid policy in South Africa. She has also condemned outright other forms of discrimination rearing its ugly head world-wide.
(vi) Nigeria has also played an important role in the supervision and promotion of the activities of the specialised agencies of U.N.O, e.g. the project embarked upon by UNICEF on the reduction of infant mortality and also that of W.H.O. on total elimination of guinea worm globally, etc.
