Outline the conditions that gave rise to the adoption of federalism in Nigeria.
(i) There was the fear of domination of one ethnic group over others.
(ii) There was the need for the protection of the minority groups and interest.
(iii) Size of the country was another factor for the adoption of federalism because of the large population and wide geographical areas.
(iv) The issue of geographical proximity/nearness was also a consideration.
(v) There was the need to bring government nearer to the people.
(vi) Diversity in culture, and interests was also a consideration as well as
(vii) desire for union/autonomy.
(viii) Historical conditions shared colonial experience by the component units was also a factor.
(ix) The 1953 political impasse in the legislative council arising from the motion for political independence by Anthony Enahoro also contributed.
(x) Constitutional breakdown. The collapse Iof the Macpherson Constitution of 1951.
(xi) Mutual agreement; for federation for Nigeria was one of the outcomes of the 1953/54 constitutional conferences on Nigeria.
