Nigeria-Canada relations were strained in 1996 because Canada strongly supported Nigeria’s suspension from the Commonwealth following the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists by the military regime of General Sani Abacha in 1995.
Canada, along with other Western nations, condemned the Nigerian government's human rights violations and joined in pressuring Nigeria through diplomatic and economic sanctions. This led to strained relations between the two countries during that period.
