Nigeria has practiced different party systems at various times in its political history:
1. Multi-party system – Practiced in the First Republic (1960–1966), Second Republic (1979–1983), and Fourth Republic (1999–present).
2. Zero-party system – Although not officially adopted, during military regimes, no political structure existed. This was a Zero-party system.
3. Regulated multi-party system – During the Abacha regime (1993–1998), political parties were regulated by the government, and only five parties were approved.
4. Two-party system – During the Third Republic (1992–1993) under General Babangida, only two parties were allowed: Social Democratic Party (SDP) and National Republican Convention (NRC).
But Nigeria has never adopted a One-party system.
