The 1999 presidential election in Nigeria, which led to the emergence of Olusegun Obasanjo as president, was conducted using the Secret Ballot system. Voters openly register and receive their ballot papers in public. However, they mark their votes in secret inside a private polling booth. After marking their votes, they drop the ballots into a sealed ballot box in the presence of election officials and observers.
