The 1962 Nigerian census was highly controversial because each region accused others of inflating their population figures to gain political and economic advantages. The census results had major political implications since representation, resource allocation, and electoral strength depended on population figures. Each region suspected the others of manipulating the numbers to increase their influence. Due to the widespread disputes and rejection of the figures, the 1962 census was declared invalid and had to be redone in 1963.
