The Mid-Western Region was created in Nigeria on August 9, 1963. It was established as a result of the 1962 census and was the first new region to be created in Nigeria after independence. This change was part of a broader effort to accommodate Nigeria's diverse ethnic and cultural groups in the federal structure.
