The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was established in 1963 with the central idea of African unity and solidarity. The founding leaders believed that only a united Africa could resist colonialism and apartheid, protect her sovereignty and promote collective strength on the global stage.
Providing a framework and opportunities for co-operation on common African problems is a central objective of the African Union. This is the successor of the OAU. The reason for this change in objective was that at that stage, all African countries had gained their independence and sovereignty, and Africa needed to focus on her many socio-political and economic problems.
