The Second World War (1939–1945) was the most significant external factor that stimulated nationalism in Nigeria. It exposed Nigerians who participated in the war to ideas of self-determination, equality and freedom, and weakened the image of European colonial superiority. After the war, returning soldiers and global anti-colonial sentiments strengthened nationalist movements across Nigeria.
