Nigeria’s active diplomatic and peacekeeping roles in the 1970s (especially in Africa and within the UN system) earned her recognition, which led to her election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on several occasions. This was a major achievement, reflecting her growing international influence, but it did not grant her permanent status or special leadership positions in the UN structure.
