A political party is an organised group of people who share similar political ideologies and work together to gain political power through elections. Their primary function is to aggregate interests, meaning they gather and represent the diverse needs, concerns and demands of different groups in society.
Why is "Aggregate Interest" the Primary Aim?
1. Representation of the People – Political parties serve as a bridge between the people and the government. They collect the concerns of citizens (workers, business owners, students, etc.) and develop policies that reflect these interests.
2. Policy Formation – By aggregating interests, political parties create manifestos and propose laws that address societal issues, such as education, healthcare, and economic development.
3. Gaining and Exercising Power – The ultimate goal of a political party is to win elections and implement its policies in government. To do this, they must unite different interest groups under a common political agenda.
