After Nigeria gained independence on 1st October 1960, the First Republic government (1960–1964) was formed through a coalition of:
1. NPC (Northern People’s Congress) – Led by Sir Ahmadu Bello (though he remained Premier of the Northern Region; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became Prime Minister).
2. NCNC/NEPU alliance – The NCNC, led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, aligned with the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) in a broader coalition.
This NPC–NCNC coalition government ruled from 1960 to 1964, with:
Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (NPC) as Prime Minister, and
Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (NCNC) as Governor-General, and later President when Nigeria became a republic in 1963.
