Under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the minimum age required to contest for membership of the House of Representatives of Nigeria is 25 years.
Originally, the constitution required 30 years. However, this was reduced after the Not Too Young To Run Act was passed in 2018 under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which amended parts of the constitution to allow younger Nigerians to run for public office.
According to the amendment:
President – 35 years
Senator – 35 years
House of Representatives – 25 years
State House of Assembly – 25 years
Therefore, to qualify for election into the House of Representatives of Nigeria, a Nigerian citizen must be at least 25 years old.
