The 1958 Constitutional Conference was convened as part of Nigeria’s journey toward independence. One of the major issues raised, especially by minority groups, was the fear of domination by the majority ethnic groups in the existing regions (North, West, and East).
To address these fears, the conference recommended the entrenchment of fundamental human rights in the constitution.
This was intended to protect minority groups from discrimination and ensure their rights were safeguarded regardless of which region they lived in.
